San Clemente Relationship Counseling – Compassionate Support for Couples
Dr. John Gottman, a leading relationship researcher, has famously noted that couples wait an average of six years after serious problems begin before seeking couples therapy. This significant delay can make it harder to repair the relationship, as negative patterns become deeply entrenched over time. Early intervention is encouraged to prevent further emotional damage and to foster healthy, lasting relationships.

What to Expect in Couples Therapy
-
During the first session, the therapist will get to know both partners, understand the relationship dynamics, and identify the issues that brought you to therapy. Each person will have the opportunity to express their concerns, goals, and expectations for therapy.
-
Together with the therapist, you'll set specific, measurable goals for the relationship. These goals might include improving communication, rebuilding trust, managing conflict more effectively, or addressing specific issues like intimacy or parenting disagreements
-
IA key part of couples therapy is helping partners communicate more openly and effectively. The therapist acts as a neutral facilitator, guiding conversations and encouraging both partners to express their feelings in a constructive way. The focus is on understanding each other's perspectives and finding solutions together.
-
IThe therapist will often teach communication and conflict resolution skills, helping couples learn how to manage disagreements in a healthy way. These skills may include active listening, empathy, and assertiveness, which can be practiced both in and outside of therapy sessions.
-
Couples therapy is not just about talking—it's about finding actionable solutions to the challenges you face. The therapist will help you and your partner develop strategies to overcome specific issues, whether they involve trust, finances, intimacy, or other aspects of your relationship.
-
IAs the therapy progresses, the therapist will regularly review your goals and the progress made. Adjustments may be made to ensure that therapy continues to meet your needs. Once significant progress has been achieved, you may decide to end therapy or reduce the frequency of sessions.
What Kind of Couples Therapy Do You Offer?
Improve Your Relationship with the Gottman Relationship Checkup
At The Bloom Room, we understand that relationships take work, and knowing where to start can sometimes be the hardest part. That's why we offer the Gottman Relationship Checkup, a tool designed to help couples better understand their relationship and identify areas for growth in therapy.
By answering a series of simple questions, you'll receive a personalized, comprehensive report that highlights your relationship’s strengths and areas that might need attention.
Here’s how we incorporate the tool into our therapy process:
Initial Assessment: At the beginning of your therapy journey, we’ll invite you to complete the Gottman Relationship Checkup online.
Personalized Insights & Tailored Approach: After completing the assessment, the results provide us with a detailed, personalized report. This report highlights your relationship’s strengths and challenges, offering a clear picture of what’s working and areas that could benefit from improvement. We use the results of the checkup to guide our sessions. Based on your unique needs, we’ll design therapy to address specific issues, whether it’s improving communication, resolving conflict, or strengthening emotional intimacy.
Ongoing Support: Throughout your therapy, the Gottman Relationship Checkup serves as a tool for progress. We can track how your relationship evolves and adjust strategies to ensure continued growth and healing.
By integrating the Gottman Relationship Checkup into therapy, we’re able to offer a structured, evidence-based approach to help you and your partner build a stronger, healthier relationship.

Couples Therapy in San Clemente FAQ
-
Yes. We offer in-person couples therapy at our San Clemente office located at 324 Avenida de la Estrella, Unit B, San Clemente, CA 92672. We also offer telehealth sessions for clients throughout California.
-
The first step is a free 15–20 minute consultation call. From there we'll match you with the therapist who feels like the best fit for what you're going through. You can book directly online or fill out our contact form and we'll guide you from there.
-
Yes — couples therapy is most effective when both partners attend together. Occasionally your therapist may recommend an individual session for one or both partners, but the primary work happens together in the room.
-
Every couple is different. Some see meaningful progress in 8–12 sessions; others benefit from longer-term work. We typically recommend starting with weekly sessions and adjusting from there based on your goals and progress.
-
This is more common than you'd think. Often one partner is more ready than the other. We'd encourage you to reach out anyway — sometimes just starting the conversation with a therapist can help you figure out how to invite your partner in. A free consultation is a low-pressure place to start.
-
Both are evidence-based approaches to couples therapy. The Gottman Method focuses on building friendship, managing conflict, and creating shared meaning — using research-based tools developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) focuses on the emotional bond between partners, helping couples identify and shift negative interaction cycles. Our therapists draw from both approaches depending on what fits your relationship best.
-
Yes. Premarital counseling is a proactive way to build a strong foundation before marriage — addressing communication styles, conflict patterns, finances, family dynamics, and expectations. It's one of the most valuable investments a couple can make.
-
Couples sessions start at $175+. Each clinician has a unique fee based on their training, experience and specialities. We do not accept insurance directly, but we partner with Mentaya to help you use your out-of-network benefits. Check your benefits here.
-
Yes. We offer virtual couples therapy for clients located anywhere in California. Many couples find online sessions just as effective as in-person, with the added convenience of attending from home.
-
That's exactly what our free consultation is for. No pressure, no commitment — just a conversation to help you figure out if we're the right fit. Several of our therapists also offer a free 30-minute in-person consultation at our San Clemente office so you can see the space and meet your therapist before committing to anything.
-
We serve clients in-person from San Clemente and surrounding South Orange County communities including Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Ladera Ranch, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo, and beyond. Virtual therapy is available statewide.
-
Not at all. Some couples come to us in a really hard place — feeling disconnected, stuck in the same arguments, or recovering from a breach of trust. Others come in because things are generally good but they want to communicate better, get ahead of patterns they're noticing, or just invest in their relationship before problems grow. Both are completely valid reasons to start. You don't have to wait until things feel broken.
